Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.
The real improvement in his game began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would often compete against each other. He had access into several of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
