Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting range of wagering options and because you have many individuals battling for the high, as well as many battling for the low hand.
