Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems complex at the outset, following a few hands you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing collection of betting choices and seeing that you have several players battling for the high, along with several battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
